Applied Behavior Analysis :For the general public

Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) is scientifically based, meaning treatment methods used have been proven to work in the laboratory and in the applied setting. It focuses on behavior mainly in changing socially important behavior (using principles of Behavior Analysis) by looking at variables in the environment, behavior and its consequences; enhancing the quality of life in individuals. The behavior change must be explained and presented in a precise , methodological order. Targeted behaviors must be significant to the individual and bring about lasting change to the individual, in the natural setting, and to society. ABA is translucent and the procedures can be taught to any participant such as teachers, parents or caregivers. The methods and procedures in ABA have been tested, and the public is able to replicate and take full advantage of its techniques without any doubt or fear.

The 7 dimensions of Applied Behavior Analysis

The science in which tactics derived from the principles of behavior are applied to improve socially significant behavior and experimentation is used to identify the variables responsible for the improvement in behavior.
The seven characteristics of ABA are
Applied-improving the life of clients, by choosing, socially meaningful behaviors to change. The change in behaviors should help the client to lead a blessed life.
Behavioral-the behavior chosen, must be the actual behavior that needs a change. Using accurate and sound measurement is really important to determine how and when changes occurred, preferably in the natural environment. Observing whose behavior has changed is also important for the integrity of the study.
Analytic- to be able to analyze and make meaningful conclusions about the data. To see how the variables are manipulated and the results it
brings.
Technological- the use of techniques in procedures has to be described accurately to enable replication of effective interventions.
Conceptually systematic- procedures should include relevant principles used during the interventions.
Effective - the behavior change should affect the client in a meaningful way bringing lasting changes to the client and to those in the client's
environment.
Generality- the behavior continues to bring desired changes in novel environment. (Cooper, Heron & Heward, 2007)

Applied Behavior Analysis can be use for
Teaching social skills and increasing verbal repertoire to children with autism.
Enhancing marital satisfaction using behavioral contracting.
Teaching independent living skills to people with brain injuries.
Reducing or eliminating aggression, and other problem behavior in animals.
Increasing and improving performances in athletes.
Establishing speech or other forms of communication in non-verbal individuals
Reducing or eliminating unwanted thoughts in people with obsessive-compulsive disorder.
Improving medical compliance in patients.
Reducing or eliminating severe self-injury in people with developmental disabilities.
Training animals to find people trapped in rubble, locate landmines, and detect drugs.
Improving acquisition in students through errorless learning
Decreasing repetitive habits such as nail biting and trichtotillamania.
Decreasing avoidance of medical procedures.
Creating and accelerating fluency in academic skills for students.
